The ancient Wassu Stone Circles are located near Wassu in The Gambia’s Central River Region. Dating from between AD 750 and 1000, they are believed to mark the burial mounds of ancient kings and chiefs.

According to local legend, a curse will befall anyone who disturbs those laid to rest there. This belief may help explain why the site has survived for so long with little human interference.
